The Town of Stratford initiated the Stratford Natural Heritage Study in 2011, when it became evident that significant natural features must be preserved for the benefit of present and future generations.

The overall purpose of the study was to conduct an inventory and assessment of natural areas within the municipal boundaries, and to provide recommendations for policymakers and planners when dealing with matters of natural heritage. The main target zones include Acadian Forest, saltwater wetlands, freshwater wetlands and ponds, natural landscapes, coastal zones, high-sloped areas, and buffer zones.

This study was developed to serve as a guide to managing the Town’s natural areas, while maintaining environmental and economic sustainability. In an area of increasing urban growth, this study will provide the necessary tools regarding the enhancement and protection of Stratford’s natural environment.
